Grand Central Terminal, Five Minutes from The Renwick
The Renwick sits at 118 East 40th Street, between Lexington and Park, which makes Grand Central Terminal a five- to seven-minute walk on foot. There is no need for a taxi, a subway ride or a transfer: you leave the hotel, turn north on Lexington Avenue, and walk three blocks.
How Far Is Grand Central from The Renwick?
The terminal's main entrance at 89 East 42nd Street is roughly 0.3 miles from our door. The faster route is the Lexington Avenue entrance at 43rd Street, which cuts the walk to about four minutes. Guests heading to Hudson Valley or Connecticut trains can be on the platform within ten minutes of leaving the lobby, which is why we recommend Metro-North over a car service for Westchester and Fairfield County.
Walking Directions
Exit the hotel and turn left toward Lexington Avenue. Walk north on Lexington past 41st and 42nd Streets. At 43rd Street you will find a side entrance into the terminal's Graybar Passage, which leads directly to the Main Concourse. If you prefer the classic view, continue to 42nd Street and cross Park Avenue to the main facade.
Terminal Hours and Entrances
Grand Central Terminal is open to the public daily from 5:15 AM to 2:00 AM. Individual shops, restaurants, the Dining Concourse and holiday hours differ, so check before an early breakfast. Entrances include 42nd Street at Park Avenue, 42nd Street at Vanderbilt Avenue, and Lexington Avenue between 42nd and 45th Streets.
What to See Inside
The Main Concourse is the obvious starting point: the celestial ceiling, the information booth clock, and the balconies above. From there, the Whispering Gallery outside the Oyster Bar plays with sound across the tiled arch, and Vanderbilt Hall hosts seasonal exhibitions and the holiday fair. The Grand Central Market on the west side sells bread, cheese, coffee and produce for anyone taking a longer train. The Dining Concourse below ground level holds a dozen casual counters and is the quickest hot meal in the building.
Trains, Subways and the LIRR
Metro-North Railroad serves the northern suburbs from tracks throughout the terminal. The 4, 5, 6, 7 and S subway lines stop at Grand Central–42nd Street, with entrances inside and beside the building. Grand Central Madison, the Long Island Rail Road terminal beneath the existing station, opened in 2023 and connects to Long Island directly, which means an LIRR trip no longer requires Penn Station.
Best Times to Visit
Weekday rush hours, roughly 7:30 to 9:30 AM and 4:30 to 6:30 PM, fill the concourse with commuters. Visitors who want photographs, or a quiet look at the ceiling, do better between 10:00 AM and 3:00 PM, or after 7:00 PM. Weekends are busy in December because of the holiday fair.
Grand Central for Business Travelers
Much of Midtown East's office stock sits within a ten-minute walk of the terminal, including Park Avenue addresses between 42nd and 57th Streets. Guests staying with us for meetings can walk to Park Avenue in four minutes, use Grand Central as a meeting point, and be back in the lobby between appointments. We can hold luggage before check-in and after check-out for anyone arriving or departing by train.
